Dave Blood, R.I.P.

You probably can't say about many loves in your life that they never disappointed you. A lot of bands inspired and entertained me, but The Dead Milkmen were the only band I actually wished I was in. I had the good fortune to meet them once after a show in Florida. I've met other "idols" and left thinking I would now have to separate the art from the artist.

But not with the Milkmen. They were just a bunch of nice guys, in a great band, maybe even somewhat surprised at being popular enough to record albums and tour the country. Even when they stopped playing together, it wasn't a breakup. They remained friends and continued to collaborate on other projects. That's uncommon and really inspiring.

Milkmen bass player Dave Blood took his own life a couple of days ago. I am very sad that one of my heroes, who gave so much joy to me, can't have a long life of boundless joy himself.

But life is a long struggle for a lot of us. No one can know why he chose suicide. I only hope he's found relief from whatever question this answered for him.
